The weight loss pill has only recently been approved in the UK by the medicines regulator, the MHRA. It is expected to become available to order from Lotus Weight Loss Clinic at the start of July, subject to confirmed UK supply and pharmacy availability.

The exact weight loss pill price in the UK has not yet been confirmed. However, it is expected that weight loss tablets will be priced similarly to weight loss injections which start around £99 per month for the lowest dose, although this may vary depending on the dose, supplier pricing, pharmacy dispensing costs, and the level of clinical support included.

The weight loss pill will be a prescription-only medicine, so the total cost may include an online consultation, prescriber review, ongoing monitoring, and medication supply.

The weight loss pill may appeal to three main groups of patients.

The weight loss pill may be suitable for adults with:

Weight-related health conditions may include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, or other obesity-related conditions.

A clinician will also check your medical history, current medication, previous weight loss medication use, side effects, pregnancy plans, and whether another treatment may be more suitable.

Take one weight loss tablet once daily, preferably when you first wake up.

For best absorption:

Do not take it with tea, coffee, juice, fizzy drinks, or food. Taking it incorrectly can reduce how much medication your body absorbs.

Some people notice reduced appetite, fewer cravings, or feeling fuller within the first few days or weeks.

Visible weight loss usually takes longer. The most noticeable results are often seen after dose escalation, particularly once patients reach the higher treatment doses.

In clinical studies, weight loss tablets helped patients lose a significant amount of weight when used alongside diet and lifestyle changes.

Average results vary, but studies showed weight loss of around 14% to 17% over 64 weeks, depending on how results were measured. Some people lose more, and some lose less.

The best results are usually seen when treatment is combined with a reduced-calorie diet, higher protein intake, regular activity, and ongoing clinical support.

Not necessarily. The best option depends on your routine, treatment history, side effects, weight loss goals, and personal preference.

The weight loss pill contains medication, the same active ingredient as weight loss injections, but it is taken as a daily tablet instead of a weekly injection. For some people, the convenience of a tablet may make treatment easier to start or easier to stick with.

In clinical trials, the weight loss pill has shown strong weight loss results. In the OASIS 4 trial, people taking weight loss tablets lost an average of 13.6% of their starting body weight after 64 weeks, compared with 2.2% with placebo. When looking at patients who stayed on treatment without additional weight loss therapies, average weight loss was estimated at 16.6%.

Weight loss injections have also shown strong results. In the STEP 1 trial, people taking weight loss weekly injections lost an average of 14.9% of their starting body weight after 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% with placebo. In patients who stayed on treatment, average weight loss was estimated at 16.9%.

There is also now a newer higher-dose weight loss weekly injection for suitable adults with obesity. In the STEP UP trial, Weight loss injection showed average weight loss of around 21% after 72 weeks. This may make the injection an option for some patients who need a higher maintenance dose, but it is not suitable for everyone and should only be used if prescribed.

This means the weight loss pill may offer similar weight loss results to the standard weight loss 2.4mg injection for some patients, while offering the benefit of being needle-free. The newer weight loss injection may offer greater average weight loss for suitable patients, but it involves a higher injectable dose and may not be appropriate for everyone.

Results vary from person to person. Weight loss tablets must also be taken correctly every morning on an empty stomach to work properly.

The official switching position is strongest for patients already stable on weight loss injections weekly, who may be able to move to weight loss tablets once daily one week after their last injection.

Yes, patients may be able to switch from dual-action injection to the weight loss pill, but this is not a direct like-for-like dose conversion.

Dual-action injection contains medication, which works on both receptors. Weight loss single-action contains medication, which is a single receptor agonist. Because they are different medicines, the doses cannot be matched exactly.

Yes, the weight loss pill can be used for weight maintenance as well as weight loss, if it remains clinically suitable for you.

Many people think of single-action treatment as something used only to lose weight, but maintaining weight loss is often the harder part. After you reach your target weight, your prescriber may recommend continuing the weight loss pill to help keep your appetite under control and reduce the risk of weight regain.

The usual maintenance dose of the weight loss pill is 25mg once daily, although some patients may stay on a lower dose for longer if this is more suitable or better tolerated.

If you stop taking weight loss, your appetite may gradually return, and some weight regain is possible, especially if lifestyle changes are difficult to maintain. This does not mean you are “dependent” on the medication, but it does reflect that obesity is a long-term condition for many people.

The most common side effects are usually digestive and are more likely when starting treatment or increasing dose.

Common weight loss pill side effects include:

• feeling sick
• vomiting
• diarrhoea
• constipation
• stomach pain
• indigestion or reflux

• headache
• tiredness
• dizziness
• taste changes

Most side effects are mild to moderate and improve as your body adjusts. Eating smaller meals, avoiding greasy foods, drinking enough fluids, and increasing doses gradually can help.

Because weight loss tablets slow stomach emptying and have specific absorption requirements, your prescriber needs to know about all medicines you take.

This is especially important if you take:

• levothyroxine
• warfarin or similar blood-thinning medicines
• insulin
• sulfonylureas
• oral contraceptives
• medicines that must be taken first thing in the morning

You must wait at least 30 minutes after taking weight loss before taking other oral medicines. Our online consultation will assess to see if you are eligible to use the weight loss pill based on your current medications. 

No. Weight loss should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

If you are planning a pregnancy, you should stop weight loss medication at least 2 months before trying to conceive. You should use effective contraception while taking weight loss.

If you become pregnant while taking weight loss, stop treatment and speak to a healthcare professional.

If you miss a dose, skip the missed tablet and take your next dose the following morning.

Do not take two tablets on the same day to make up for a missed dose. Missing doses regularly can reduce the effectiveness of treatment.

The weight loss pill is not currently available on the NHS. NHS access will depend on NICE guidance, local availability, and eligibility criteria.
